I have a 2 year-old cat named Faith. She is the SWEETEST and has made such a tremendous impact on my own well-being. I love her more than I thought it was possible to love an animal. She has a tumor in her Mediastinum area. She’s been taking chemotherapy meds for it and it is shrinking and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I’m concerned though that her time in my small apartment is lonely and creates anxiety and dis-ease in her and I want her to have the happiest of existences. Is there any way to tell if she needs a playmate or how I can ease her anxiety?

Dear Concerned Kitty Mommy,
The moment I read your question, I knew I was going to answer it in this month’s column. First, as you have yourself expressed, the connection between an animal and their human, is one of the most powerful connections we humans can experience. I can’t tell you how many people have said exactly the same thing “I love this dog/cat… more than I ever believed was possible!” There is a reason behind this love – it’s the connection between the two souls: the Soul Contract. As you will hear me say over and over, animals want to help human-kind evolve and one of the ways they do this is through their personal relationships with us. This means that you can read into the behavior of Faith to figure out how she’s helping you evolve – and as you evolve, this will in return assist Faith.
When I connect with Faith – I’m immediately guided to connect with you as well. The two of you are so intricately linked that in order to feel like there is a complete connection, I must include you. Faith shows me that you spend a lot of time worrying about her, worrying about the environment, worrying that things in your life are or aren’t going correctly (not just concerning her but also in other areas of your life). She shows me that you like to make sure things are “just so” and that when things are not that way, you work hard to correct them so they match your expectations. Now, don’t get me wrong – she’s not saying this with any judgment (like “Oh no! Julie is such an anxious person! Get her out of my life!”) Instead, she shows me that your life contains a lot of nervousness and disquiet. She feels that the anxiety you have over things going “right” is distracting you from having fun and fully enjoying all of your relationships – including the relationship with her.
So, the reason you are seeing discomfort in Faith is because she is mirroring your own anxiety back to you. She’s actually using herself as the example so that you can see the behavior that isn’t serving you. I know, I know. It’s a pretty incredible idea. But, if you can accept the belief that Faith is in your life as companion, partner and teacher, understanding her mirroring of your behavior becomes easier.
As you work on your anxiety (whatever that means to you – it may mean yoga, meditation, running outside, drawing, screaming… who knows! It’s up to you to find out) and you begin to feel more at peace with your environment, within yourself and with Faith, she will reflect that back to you. This is her Soul Contract with you. This is why she is in your life. Faith will act as a barometer for you, helping you have more peace, and more acceptance for those things you cannot control- by reflecting the degree of your anxiety back to you. For Faith, it’s not about being lonely while you’re out of the house or about wanting another animal friend (although she does say she’d love another “one” to hang out with – but that’s beside the point), it’s about wanting to help you with your nervous energy, wanting to help you be grounded and calm so that the two of you can be more connected and go even deeper in your relationship. She also says that this will help you with your other relationships too. Accepting what you cannot change. She says “it’s time to go more with the flow than you ever have before!” and that’s what will make her the happiest.
